If you’ve spent any time browsing yarn at Tink & The Frog, you’ve probably seen the word superwash on a few labels—especially in the sock yarn section. But what does that actually mean? And how do you know when it’s the right yarn to choose?

Let’s break it down.

What Is Superwash Wool?

Basically, “superwash wool” is wool that’s been specially treated so it won’t felt when you wash it. Normally, wool fibers have little barbs that lock together when exposed to heat, moisture, and agitation—that’s why felting happens. With superwash wool, those barbs are either chemically smoothed out or coated (usually with a type of resin), which helps the yarn glide more easily and resist felting.

The result? A soft, smooth yarn that can often be machine washed—we recommend always using a gentle cycle.

How Superwash Yarn Behaves

Superwash wool is known for a few key traits:

  • It’s machine washable. Always check the label, but many superwash yarns are washer-friendly, making them ideal for gifts, baby items, and socks.
  • It’s softer to the touch. The treatment smooths the fibers, which makes it feel gentler against your skin.
  • It drapes more than untreated wool. Great for shawls or sweaters where you want some flow, but it might stretch a little more over time. Hint: block your gauge swatch – preferably with a bit of weight on it if it’s going to be a sweater!
  • It takes dye beautifully. You’ll often see superwash yarns in bright, vibrant colors because of how the fibers absorb color.

When to Choose Superwash Yarn

Superwash yarn is a fantastic option when:

  • You’re making socks, hats, mitts, or accessories that get worn a lot.
  • You’re gifting a handmade item to someone who might toss it in the wash.
  • You want bright colors or multi-colored skeins that pop.
  • You’re working with babies or kids and want something soft, washable, and practical.

We carry a number of beautiful superwash yarns in the shop, including:

  • Malabrigo Rios
  • Wonderland Yarns Confetti
  • Manos del Uruguay Alegria
  • Malabrigo Vientos
  • And most of our sock yarns!

What If You Don’t Want Superwash?

We get it—some knitters prefer the feel, sustainability, or structure of untreated wool. If that’s you, you’re in good company.

At Tink & The Frog, we also stock several non-superwash yarns that are just as wonderful in their own way. Some favorites include:

  • Woolstok and Woolstok Light from Blue Sky Fibers – beautifully rustic and perfect for colorwork.
  • Other untreated wools and natural fibers that give structure and “memory” to your stitches.

Bonus: Non-superwash yarns felt on purpose, so if you love felting projects or want to try one, ask us what yarns are best.

The Future of Superwash

There’s a lot of conversation in the industry right now about how to make superwash more sustainable. Some companies are looking into eco-friendly treatments or skipping certain chemicals altogether. It’s a work in progress—but one we’re keeping an eye on.

In the meantime, we’re here to help you choose yarns that match your project, your values, and your lifestyle.

The Bottom Line

Whether you reach for superwash for its vibrant colors and easy care, or you love the structure and sustainability of untreated wool, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

At Tink & The Frog, we’ll help you find the yarn that’s just right—for your hands, your heart, and your next beautiful project.
